What is the Future of Lithium Ion Technology for UPS Batteries

Generic BatteryData center operators rely on UPS technology for protecting their expensive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment from power surges.

This battery-backup technology is based on the storage of energy to provide backup power required for sustained operations over an extended time.

Typically, these systems require a short-term support for safe shut-down of the critical components connected to the UPS.

In this instance, VRLA or Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid batteries have been the conventional choice due to their reliability and sustainability. More recently, the supremacy of this system is being challenged and often replaced by the emerging technology of the lithium-ion battery-powered UPS.

Here, we discuss the key factors and relative merits of each battery type:

 VRLA Battery Systems:

The initial purchase costs of VRLA batteries can be lower when compared to the new-age lithium-ion technology, but even this is changing as the price of lithium-ion products has fallen as the technology becomes more widespread and available.

The systems are reliable, safe and proven effective based on years of use within UPS systems. However, there are issues including reduced power capacities, increased impedance, and overcharging that come with lead-based systems. Even in the small lithium ion uninterruptible power supply systems, you can find better energy density and power capacities.

VRLA batteries are also highly temperature-dependent. They are used most effectively when kept in temperature-controlled rooms. Any operation above the recommended temperature limits can cause severe damage to the system. In fact, overheating it can reduce the life expectancy of your lead UPS by 50%. Similarly, low temperature can also affect the service life and performance of the battery.

Lithium-Ion Battery Systems:

When compared to the traditional VRLA systems, lithium-ion batteries can sometimes be more expensive to initially purchase. However, they have a longer operational life term of 12-15 years, compared with about 4-5 years for lead-acid systems. They are also about 60% lighter and 70% smaller than their conventional counterparts. The Li-ion batteries designed for UPS systems are also optimized for safety and have a greater range of operating temperatures. This allows them to be placed near the systems they protect, without requiring the investment of a separate environmentally-controlled room.

Whether you need a large or a small lithium ion uninterruptible power supply, you can benefit from the unique chemistry of this technology. It has fewer chemical processes in comparison to VRLA batteries. The electrode structure of Li-ion batteries works as a host for single lithium ions moving freely between the negative and positive electrodes.

With each battery grouping monitored independently, the predictability of performance in this technology helps with improving the efficiency and productivity of the businesses.

What Lies in the Future?

In the future, it can be expected that Lead-Acid batteries will continue to have a foothold for some data center applications. But, they are facing extremely tough competition from lithium-ion batteries that have better total cost of ownership in the long run with lower maintenance requirements and fewer replacement costs. Lithium-Ion systems are also lightweight and have detailed monitoring systems included.

With new innovations and dropping prices, we expect to see growing popularity for the Li-Ion UPS technology, with the development and availability of new systems coming online regularly.

Many organizations have already embraced such systems with open arms. If you’re ready to embrace such systems, check out our online N1 Critical Lithium-Ion-UPS.com catalog or give us a call —(855) 208-0011.

N1 Critical Technologies changing the game with new lines of UPS systems

N1 Critical Technologies is putting a new charge in the backup electrical power industry with the introduction of its all new Lithium Ion-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

The Janesville, Wisconsin-based manufacturer has developed a growing set of UPS systems rated from 1KVA to 10KVA, which have expandable run-times of 12+ hours with additional battery packs.

The 13 models that make up the new L-Series and XL-Series use reliable and safety-tested batteries made with Lithium Iron Phosphate. N1 Critical’s battery chemistry is safer, more stable and provides superior thermal operation, allowing its UPS systems to run efficiently in more extreme environments (32º-140º vs. 32º to 104º for comparable lead acid systems).

With a 10-15-year expected operational life, they last up to three-times as long as the Valve Regulated Lead (VRLA) batteries they are designed to replace, while also using less space, energy and weighing 33 percent less.

“Lead acid-based UPS systems are on the way out, while Lithium Ion systems like ours are the future of backup power supplies,” said N1 Critical founder and Chief Executive Officer Nate Ellsworth. “The benefits of our products are many. They will save companies time, money and hassle from day one after the installation of our systems.”

Additionally, the batteries used in N1 Critical’s products can be discharged more than 1,000 times (vs about 400 discharges for lead-based batteries), while also recharging faster and more efficiently.

“Anyone installing our battery backup systems will appreciate their lighter weight and smaller footprint,” Ellsworth said, noting that the extra space gained from removing older and larger backup systems can be used for other critical building infrastructure. “Installers and users will also appreciate the lower energy use and longer run-times in the event of a power failure.”

Each model in both the L- and XL-Series features online double-conversion technology, which delivers a “clean” and steady supply of voltage to the appliances attached to the UPS, which is critical for sensitive (and often very expensive) equipment.

The models can be both rack- or tower-mounted, and all come standard with SNMP network interface cards and software to manage them remotely. Each has been ETL certified and independently tested to UL standards.

Perhaps best of all is the limited lifetime warranty on all electronic components and a 10-year warranty on batteries in the L- and XL-Series Lithium Ion UPS Systems. If a UPS fails, simply let N1 Critical Technologies know and a new unit will be on its way.

“With our competitive price-point, feature-rich units and wide selection, you simply cannot go wrong choosing an N1 Critical Technologies UPS product,” Ellsworth said. “These aren’t just going to be a game changer. They’re going to be an industry changer. The next generation of UPS systems are here now and are available from N1 Critical.”

Lead acid batteries are on the way out. Lithium Ion is here

Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries have been used for years in uninterruptible power supply systems, but now, the sleek, ultra-efficient and comparably priced lithium ion batteries from N1 Critical Technology are changing the UPS and battery power systems landscape.

Lithium ion has five times the energy density of a lead-acid battery, while using only one-third of the space for the same power delivering capabilities!

“With our engineers, we’ve discovered a way of producing the same power as was generated by lead acid power supply batteries but with less pollution and a smaller footprint,” said Nate Ellsworth, N1 Critical founder and CEO. “Our lithium ion batteries require less cooling while using only a third of the space and weighing about 33 percent less than bulkier lead-acid battery.”

Additionally, a VRLA battery’s operational lifespan is less than half that of a lithium counterpart. Lead acid’s operational life is also reduced high heat environments, where N1 Critical’s lithium ion batteries can tolerate high temperatures of 140ºF.

“We all know that heat can destroy most anything, and the power and lifespan of lead-based batteries is definitely impacted by heat over periods of time,” said Vice President of Sales Jeff Hansing. “However, our lithium ion battery has a service life of 10-15 years, more than twice the life expectancy of any competitor’s VRLA battery. This saves our buyers money and hassle over the long term as they won’t have to buy new batteries every five years, or so.”

Those still using the lead acid battery power supply systems should make the switch to the new N1 Critical Technologies’ Lithium battery backup systems, today. The lithium ion battery power supply systems are flexible, easy to install and are equipped to handle virtually all requirements needed by IT departments.

Businesses with a small- to medium-sized computer workstations, data centers, desktop computers or sensitive equipment relying on a steady stream of uninterruptible power should consider N1 Critical’s L-Series or the more powerful XL-Series Lithium Ion UPS systems.

The L-Series lineup has models in 1kVA, 2kVA, 2.2kVA and 3kVA, while the larger XL-Series offers 5kVA, 6kVA and 10kVA models.

Each series has online, double-conversion power protection and remote monitoring and control software. They also have pedestal and rail kits, so units can be a free-standing tower or can be installed on an IT rack.

“It excites us to be leaders in the lithium ion UPS market today,” Ellsworth said. “We are always innovating, setting the pace and shaping the landscape in the power supply and UPS battery systems industry.”

3 Reasons You Should Go for a UPS With a Lithium-ion Batteries

For more than 40 years, there were only minor changes that the Uninterruptible Power Supply (or UPS) has seen. There was no change in the critical components of energy storage and technology. They use lead-acid batteries in most of the UPS systems like they used to do decades earlier.

Today, however, the stage is set to drastically change UPS technology. Thanks to the developing technology of smartphones, laptops, and other gadgets or devices. Many were waiting for a long time to see this implemented in the UPS systems.

With the advent of UPS lithium battery, it is set to solve all the major problems that you encounter. You do not have to struggle using a UPS with the lead-acid battery.

These are few outstanding benefits that you will enjoy when you use a UPS with a lithium-ion battery.

Do Not Worry About Space: Firstly, you get more energy as well as power density when you use a Li-ion battery. It is a lot when you compare with valve regulated lead acid battery which they use widely in a UPS.

It significantly reduces the required square foot when you compare it with the VRLA battery UPS system. Cooling requirements as well are reduced drastically. It also means there is a reduction in the overall body weight of the equipment.

It means the Li-ion battery will help you meet the same requirement or more utilizing less space and cooling requirements. You do not have to worry about getting an appropriate place to set this unit because you do not need too much of space.

It means you can use this space to set up other important things. It gives you flexibility when it comes to planning.

Temperature Fluctuation Does Not Affect the System: The best part about the Li-ion batteries is that they do not get affected by fluctuation in the temperature. It can withstand different temperature ranges, unlike the VRLA battery

The VRLA battery life drastically reduces whenever there is 10° C (18°C) increase in the temperature above 25°C (77°C). Li-ion batteries, on the other hand, do not fail when there are spikes in the temperature. There is no significant effect on the battery life making it ideal to last longer.

It is quite durable than the VRLA battery. Li-ion batteries, as a result, do not get hotter like that of a VRLA battery. It is one key reason for you not to have large cooling capacity units set up. You also do not require an extensive room or space to set up the entire UPS system.

BMS System in Place: A Li-ion battery usually comes with a battery monitoring system or BMS that is quite sophisticated. It will indicate the life and health condition of the battery. You will exactly know when to replace the battery. It is more or less like the smartphone battery indicator.

Whereas the VRLA batteries might work well until the day it suddenly fails without giving you any notice. There is no way for you to find its health status.

These are some reasons why UPS lithium battery is the best option when you compare with VRLA batteries.

Lithium Ion UPS

Selecting the ideal storage solution for an industrial process, critical infrastructure, critical building or a data center can be a daunting task. The backup storage solutions in use today are expected to maintain both manageability and availability or increase to increase them. However, all this should be achieved while decreasing UPS footprint. Lithium ion UPS strikes a perfect balance between safety, performance and cost. Every battery is made up of numerous cells and these depend on the required power. The cells of lithium ion batteries are each engineered as independent systems that operate in a parallel electronic topology.

Value proposition

Lithium-ion battery technology has greatly evolved and is currently financially viable for fresh applications as well as in larger applications like data centers and electric cars. The following are some notable value propositions for lithium ion UPS:

i. It greatly decreases the Total Cost of Ownership also known as TCO.

ii. It enhances both the manageability and predictability of backup storage.

iii. It is associated with decreased cooling requirements.

iv. It has a higher durability as well as reduced maintenance costs in comparison to traditional VRLA batteries. The cycle life of lithium ion battery exceeds 1000 cycles for UPS applications. Traditional lead-acid batteries have 200 – 400 cycles before they require to be replaced for new ones.

v. It decreases battery footprint and weight to a large extent thus promoting efficiency in space utilization. Lithium ion battery systems for UPS take up approximately 50% to 80% less floor space. In addition, these battery systems weigh less compared to lead-acid system i.e. 60-80%

vi. It has extremely fast UPS recharge.

vii. It also ensures scalability for power redundancies or upgrades.

Other benefits include the following:

Simplicity is what facilitates reliability in all systems. Lithium ion cells are characterized by simpler and fewer chemical processes. This allows for the use of detailed mathematical models by engineers in the prediction of performance of cells in difficult operating patterns.

Lithium ion batteries for UPS lack hazardous materials. This means that it is more environmentally friendly. Lead-acid batteries contain lead that is very harmful.

Maintenance requirements for Lithium Ion industrial Ups are quite low. This is because it lacks fluid levels to be measured and maintained. Furthermore, consumers do not have to be concerned with battery memory. The batteries do not need periodic cycling for calibration of their runtime. In fact, most lithium ion industrial Ups have a lifespan of 10+ years.

It should be noted that the level of cell design as well as the material quality of lithium ion batteries should always be suitable for intended applications for best performance. In addition, all lithium-ion batteries should have a battery management system due to a high sensitivity to the manner by which they are charged as well as discharged.

The main purpose of Uninterruptible Power Supplies is to provide data processing security. This means that a new UPS electricity storage technology ought to provide such opportunities and this is what lithium ion UPS is doing. The above insightful information clearly shows the numerous benefits lithium ion has compared with lead-acid batteries. Nonetheless, VRLA technology is still capable of effectively offering support to existing structures.
